It is outstandingly distressing to deal with plugged sewers.

We have all been there – we’re in the shower, and suddenly we feel the water start to rise up around our feet. Is there anything as inconvenient and messy as a stopped drainpipe!. What about that wet sinking feeling when you are brushing your teeth at the washbasin on a lousy Monday morning and the filled sink just refuses to drainpipe!. The prospect of sorting stopped drains out is not a happy one; it can be messy and time consuming. However it is something that every household has to deal with, sooner or later. The most preferred approach is to prepare ahead of time for such a predicament by educating oneself on how to fix bathroom drainage when the drain pipes become stopped.

What Causes blocked drains in your home?.

Blocked drainage can result from trapped solid objects such as hair, dust and particles between your bathroom drain pipe and the attached pipes. The problem is further exacerbated when household products such as soaps, detergents, shampoos and conditioners and others are allowed to build up on the growing accumulation. Eventually this will become more and more dense and this is what prevents your water running uninhibited through your drain pipe. If water builds up quickly in your sink or tub when it should flow smoothly out of your drain, you may already have a plumbing clog on your hands.

How do you unblock your drains?.

You can do a number of things to unblock your bathtub or bathroom sink drain. The first step is to remove the plug whether the blocked drain pipe is in a sink or bath. With a bathroom sink this can be as easy as pulling it right out or as complicated a problem as looking under the sink and removing the nut that holds it in place. With your bath tub, you can either unscrew the plug right at the drainpipe or removing the overflow plate to remove the assembly.

You might be able to see the reason for the blockage after you have successfully taken the plug out. You are most likely to see bunch of hair and other debris entangled in a clog. Put on a pair of gloves and extract whatever clogs comes within reach. You may find it difficult to get at the blockage, in which case you could use something like a wire hanger to fish the material out. There is a good chance that by removing this mass of material the problem will be rectified and your water will flow smoothly.

However, there is a chance that you will not be able to reach the blockage with the wire so you will have to try something else. A plunger will be helpful next step in removing clogs that are out of the reach of your hand. In the first step, use a wet cloth to cover the overflowing drain, and then use the plunger; this will make the suction stronger. Now position the plunger exactly over and around the drain pipe hole and push it rapidly up and down with short quick movements. Hopefully, after doing this and once the plunger is taken away, any water should flow freely down the drain pipe as the vacuum created shifted the blockage.

If the plunger method fails to properly unblock your drain pipe, you may have to resort to using chemical drain cleaner. Chemicals should be applied only after all else fails because they are treacherous and can damage your bathroom hardware.

You can always take professional help if this concerns you.

If all the steps outlined above fail to clear the clogged up drain, then it is best to call in a crack team – a qualified and experienced plumber or drains contractor from your area. Professional plumbers will have specialist equipment and know-how to unblock your drain pipe in next to no time. Although availing plumber services can be a costly proposition it gives you the much needed peace of mind as the water starts running and the mess is cleaned up.
